KBA Bridges the Gap Between Analog and Digital Packaging Printing By all accounts, digital packaging printing of all kinds is poised for strong growth over the next fi ve years. Whether it be corrugated, folding carton, or even fl exible packaging, all eyes are on digital to make strong inroads into these print applications. Shorter runs, customization, and faster turn times are the oft-cited drivers of the move to digital packaging production, but there will continue to be a demand for long-run packaging. Thus comes the need to serve both these masters. KBA (Booth 1435) is touting the forthcoming fruits of its partnership with Xerox (Booth 1625): the The KBA VariJET 106 Powered by Xerox is a combination of Xerox’s Impika inkjet technology with KBA’s Rapida 106 press platform. joint development an industrial digital sheetfed press for the folding carton market. The KBA VariJET 106 Powered by Xerox is a combination of Xerox’s Impika inkjet technology with KBA’s Rapida 106 press platform. It will permit the combination of conventional printing and fi nishing technologies with digital inkjet printing in a hybrid press. It can print up to seven inkjet colors and offer print speeds of up to 4,500 29.5x41.7" sheets per hour at 1,400 dpi. Its modular design allows its digital inkjet printing capabilities to be augmented with optional inline printing, coating, cold foil application, rotary die-cutting, creasing, and perforating units. The VariJET is slated to be available in early 2017. At drupa, KBA-Flexotecnica also showcased the new CI fl exo NEO XD LR HYBRID, and it is making its North American debut at GRAPH EXPO 16. It prints with solvent- and water-based inks as well as UV-LED and electron beam (EB) curing inks. Designed for fl exible packaging printing, it prints up to 12 colors and features a cut-off from 400 to 1,200mm, a maximum web width of 1,650mm, and a maximum printing speed of up to 500m/min. Folding cartons, fl exible packaging, and corrugated KBA entered the corrugated flexo market more than a decade ago with the Corrugraph fl exo press for large-format corrugated board printing. The company returns to sheetfed fl exo corrugated with the latest-generation Corrugraph, also making its North American debut this week. It was designed for maximum fl exibility, print quality, user-friendliness, and ease of maintenance. The Corrugraph with an inline rotary die-cutter has a maximum rated output of 12,000 sheets per hour, and can print and die-cut multicolor graphics inline on corrugated board up to 3,400mm wide and 10mm thick. The company is currently seeking beta sites for the new machine. Standard Demonstrates Smarter Workfl ow and “Game Changing” Effi ciency in Feeding and Finishing Standard Finishing Systems (Booth 1548) once again occupies one of the largest spaces on the show fl oor, presenting a showcase of feeding and fi nishing solutions. Standard’s focus is on workfl ows from creation to fi nishing, and how in-line, near-line, and multi-function systems can maximize productivity with fewer steps and more output possibilities. The booth includes live demonstrations in die-cutting, perfect binding and trimming, slitting and creasing, folding, saddlestitching, inspection systems, and roll-fed print solutions, as well as North American debuts for a new die cutting system and an enhanced web tracking and inspection tool. Finishing versatility The Standard Horizon SmartSlitter is an all-in-one smart sheet processing system that can slit, gutter cut, edge trim, cross-cut, perforate, and crease all in one pass. The skip perforation feature can produce T- and L-perfs ideal for coupons, tickets, and business reply cards. The system is also capable of both matrix and rotary creasing, and for accordion fold applications or perfect bound books, up and down creasing can be performed in one pass. Print mark registration adjusts for image shift from sheet to sheet. The color touchscreen features a simple user interface for easy operation including job setup via barcode. Also featured is the Standard Horizon RD-4055 Rotary Die Cutter, designed to meet the growing demand for short-run die-cut product, with the ability to diecut, crease, perforate, slit, hole punch, and round corner in one process for both digital and offset printed sheets. Already a GRAPH EXPO MUST SEE ’EMS Award Winner, the RD-4055 is ideal for producing a variety of unique applications, including door hangers, table tents, CD holders, pop-up business cards, stickers, labels, and specialty packaging. The system features easy change-over and simple operation via color touchscreen, and can achieve up to 6,000 cycles/hour on sheet sizes up to 15.74x21.65". A repeat register function allows multiple-up applications from a single-up die to minimize costs. Presented with the RD-4055 and making its North American debut is the Dual Magnetic Cylinder, allowing for magnetic and pin-registered mounting of matching male and female dies, and providing additional creasing and embossing patterns to suit a wider range of substrates and light packaging applications. Roll-fed confi gurations Standard Hunkeler’s WI6 system is the latest innovation in inspection and tracking software, ensuring error-free print quality through continuous monitoring of the printed web for quality-related checks such as color registration, frontto back registration, variable content, print marks, logos, pictures, and jet-outs. The new space-saving, integrated design employs compact CIS (Contact Image Sensor) technology for high-end quality and integrity control, and can be combined with the Hunkeler Site Manager for fl exible reporting and tracking at the line, job, document, and sheet level. At the show, the WI6 system is running on Standard’s continuous-feed saddlestitching solution, a roll-to-booklet configuration that pairs the Standard Horizon StitchLiner 6000 saddlestitcher with Hunkeler’s UW6 unwinder and CS6 rotary cutter to produce up to 6,000 high-quality booklets per hour at 600 ft./ min. with fully-automated set-up and variable sheet-count bookletmaking. Standard is also showcasing a roll-tostack solution to deliver book blocks for perfect binding. The system features Hunkeler’s AutoRegister to automatically divert blank pages and accurately register to the print marks, and the Hunkeler LS6 nonstop stacker with improved vacuum control. The confi guration runs at up to 500 ft/ min to produce straight and fully separated book blocks 3-up from a roll. Book blocks are then transferred for near-line fi nishing on Horizon perfect binders and trimmers to demonstrate easy set-up and changeovers with single person operation. 20 | September 25, 2016 | GRAPH EXPO 16 Offi ci cial Show Daily | PrintingNews.com angers, stickecialty and p o apsingle to 4055 Amere Maglowing for n-reg- , desig Standard Horizon RD-4055 Rotary Die Cutter
