The In-Plant Place Augments the State of the Industry Sponsored by the In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA), Booth 2425 is the dedicated “In-Plant Place,” a meeting and networking zone for in-plant printing department managers and other personnel to share information, meet with IPMA staff, and even experience some non-Pokémon-related augmented and virtual reality. “We will be having state-of-the-industry chats and roundtables and diving into some of the benchmarking data that came out of our survey,” says Carma Goin, Executive Director of IPMA. The highlight of GRAPH EXPO for IPMA is the publication at the show of “The State of the In-Plant Industry: Outlook, Challenges, and Opportunities,” an extensive research project that provides the most comprehensive snapshot of the in-plant industry today. The report’s top level fi ndings, as well as conclusions, implications, and recommendations for in-plant departments, will be presented by Dr. Joe Webb, co-author of the report, at a special IPMA luncheon on Monday, September 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The luncheon is sponsored by Canon USA (Booth 1500), Ricoh (Booth 2035), Rochester Software Associates (Booth 2067), and XMPie (Booth 1625). Dr. Webb will also be available in the In-Plant Place booth after the luncheon for one-on-one follow-up conversations. The “The State of the In-Plant Industry: Outlook, Challenges, and Opportunities.” report will also comprise part of the “Conversations with Canon” series taking place in Canon USA’s booth. Jimmy Vainstein, Senior Project Manager for The World Bank’s Printing and Multimedia Services unit, will also be appearing at the IPMA luncheon to deliver an unparalleled presentation called “Refresh Your Reality.” Vainstein’s session will discuss how in-plant professionals can use omni-channel technology to guarantee a seamless integration between print and digital media. His presentation will be revolutionary for in-plant facilities that are trying to meet the needs of customers in the modern world of marketing. During his presentation, Vainstein will also include a cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) segment. By attending his presentation, attendees will get the insight they need in order to offer their clients technologies that allow content to be magically unlocked by scanning printed pieces with a mobile device. After Vainstein’s presentation, he will be at the In-Plant Place with goggles on hand to offer visitors a truly authentic VR experience. “We’ll try to make it as interactive as possible,” said Vainstein. “Everyone likes a chance to do something different and new,” says Goin. Production Inkjet Luncheon at GRAPH EXPO 16 Marco Boer presents a “State of the Production Inkjet Market.” Host Marco Boer, noted analyst at IT Strategies, will present a “State of the Production Inkjet Market” and then lead an interactive printer panel discussion with some leading inkjet technology end users. This luncheon, which will be held tomorrow from 11:45 am - 1:15 pm in the North Hall - Rooms N310AB is sponsored by NAPCO Media and Printing Impressions, will provide an excellent opportunity to learn about the latest trends in high-speed production inkjet technology and hear real-life, candid experiences from printers who have implemented inkjet technology in their operations. Attendance is free, but is by preregistration only. This invitation-only event is designed for both current and prospective inkjet press users. Controls Upgrade for Minneapolis Star Tribune with manroland web systems The Minneapolis-based Star Tribune has chosen an innovative strategy to deal with controls and electronic obsolescence issues on their current press equipment. Star Tribune's success in building a regional print center compounded the need to upgrade and make current the press controls on its Headliner Offset Press. In an effort to stabilize their press system for the foreseeable future, they needed a controls system which would allow their presses to be highly utilized and perform reliably. In the past year, the engineering teams at manroland web systems (Booth 1119) developed a solution for print centers with press equipment of any brand to use the controls system, PECOM-X. The controls retrofi t of PECOM-X accesses the PECOM-X Control Desk through offthe shelf electronic gateways, increasing capabilities to make job changeovers faster, reduce waste, and increase color and format fl exibility. Moreover, these upgrades are being done through a series of phases, eliminating the interruptions to production, as well as reducing the impact on capital expenditures for Star Tribune. Each phase has been designed so that Star Tribune's printing needs will continue to be met throughout the upgrade process. As a part of the selection process, the team at Star Tribune received detailed plans on how each phase of the upgrade was going to be launched. Star Tribune also contacted users that had recent experience with the PECOM-X platform, and using PECOM-X upgrade programs. manroland web systems’ reputation in the marketplace, and the testimonials of its customers were one of the determining factors. “During the selection process with manroland web systems, we became confi dent that manroland has the knowledge of the complexities of our entire controls platform,” says Kevin Desmond, Senior Vice President of Operations for Star Tribune. “The long-term goals and expertise of their team members created a technology partnership which fi ts our desire to continue to grow and develop our own production models.” “This retrofi t is engineered by a dedicated press manufacturer with active R&D, developing new products based on market requirements. Our new generic hardware-based platform provides Star Tribune all the required fl exibility to act according to the fast changing demands of their readers and advertising clients, and our solutions even give the possibility to enter additional business fi elds at times of lower press utilization,” says Dieter Betzmei e r , E xe c ut i v e Vice President Technology and Project Execution. “The retrofi t business is one of our main strategic targets, and we see ourselves as partners to our customers, to keep their equipment on a high performance level. But we are not only aiming to provide solutions to keep the installed press base current, but also to show possibilities to enhance performance and implement additional functionality for a wider equipment utilization.“ manroland web systems North America CEO Greg Blue shares his thoughts on the impact this controls upgrade will have on the industry. “We determined that one of the best ways to implement our growth initiative in North America was to broaden our scope of services to the entire industry. We have the most robust controls system in printing, so why not fi nd a way to share our engineering expertise with the industry at large? This controls upgrade on Star Tribune's Headliner Offset press is a milestone event for manroland web systems, as it extends our controls systems technology beyond the manroland footprint.” 54 | September 25, 2016 | GRAPH EXPO 16 Offi cial Show Daily | PrintingNews.com
