Foil patched and shape cut envelope produced on a W+D 410 Easy Enveloper Color Management: It Doesn’t Start or End with the Printer When people think about talking about G7 Certifi cation. Meeting G7 requirements is extremely helpful in benchmarking color capabilities. Many smaller shops are choosing to take G7 courses without doing the certifi cation paperwork. That way, they get the best of both worlds: having G7-quality color without the additional requirements that, while easy enough to handle for larger operations, can distract smaller ones from their core business. Regardless of certifi cation, quality color can help your shop grow business. Be sure to calibrate carefully, at every step of the production process. If necessary, ask for help from an outside expert—but be sure to enlist someone who can calibrate across your entire operation or things won’t be as colorful as they should be. But color management is an end-to-end process. Printers only make up only a portion of the process. The rest is elsewhere. Colors that are right on your monitor but come out a little—or a lot—off can be frustrating. So what’s happening? Color quality degradation outside of the printer is in the transitions between people, devices, and processes. This can occur during fi le compression when a photographer emails a photo, computer monitors are differently calibrated, or using different substrates, devices, or workfl ows for proofed copies and fi nals, causing inconsistencies. Prevalence of multivendor operations has encouraged many printers to employ third-party, vendor-neutral consultants who provide gap analysis not only from step-to-step but across their entire output fl eet. For example, Ricoh (Booth 2035) provides these vendor-agnostic services. Sound Color Management involves maintaining color consistency in a lot more than just your output devices. Regularly adjusting monitors and other devices to help ensure accurate color representation throughout your operation continues on long after color experts’ calibrations. While it’s tempting to set a calendar reminder to check your color, the fact is color checkups should work a little differently than that. If one week you have a major, color-intensive job, but your next color checkup isn’t for another week, that time in between may produce lower color quality output as a result. Schedule color analyses and calibrations based on workload to help ensure consistent color. It’s hard to talk quality color without ADG TMeeting Today he American Dealer Group (ADG) will host their product development meeting today at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC). ADG is an incorporated group of local independent printing equipment and supply dealers serving the graphics imaging industry. ADG members operate as solution providers in all phases of production: digital presses, direct imaging, offset presses, bindery, and fi nishing operations, as well as all of their related consumable products. ADG meets several times a year, and routinely at GRAPH EXPO. This year’s meeting is a closed-door event for members only, and vendor presentations at this event are invite-only.
