At GRAPH EXPO 16, leading market players turbo-charge the inkjet explosion with innovative new products and technologies By Toni McQuilken The past few years have seen an GRAPH EXPO 16 set to refresh and help grow your business in Orlando, where you wil meet new people, discover new technology, and explore new markets. The wider range of substrates is not the only factor fueling growth in the inkjet market. Increasingly, the technology is driving costs out of print, allowing PSPs to see greater returns on projects that would have been cost prohibitive on inkjet just a few years ago. More efficient, productive machines at lower price points are allowing to enter the market. “Companies are looking for ways to drive costs out of their business,” notes Ken Hanulec, EFI Vice President of Mar- (continued on page 62) are being able to offer far more choices to printers than in the early days.” “We are also seeing a strong attempt made by paper manufacturers to get into the production inkjet market,” echoes Francis A. McMahon, Senior Vice President, PPS Marketing, Canon Solutions America, a subsidiary of Canon USA (Booth 1500). “These companies are increasingly developing paper specifically for high-speed inkjet printing and are working with manufacturers to test and certify multiple papers.” Expectations are High for this Year’s GRAPH EXPO 16 This year’s GRAPH EXPO 16 opens with Show Daily: This is your first GRAPH EXPO as president of NPES/GASC. Every part of the process, from the machines to the inks to the substrates, has benefitted from huge leaps in quality, fueling the switch many print service providers (PSPs) are making from offset to digital technologies—inkjet in particular— for an increasingly broad range of applications. The pace of that transition will only continue to gain speed. “Part of what is leading to that growth is the availability of a larger set of substrates,” says Ed Wong, Director of Product Marketing, Ricoh Production Printing Group for Ricoh Americas Corp. (Booth 2035). “As the adoption of high-speed inkjet has grown, paper mills have been paying attention, working to continue to expand the types of paper that can be utilized with inkjet presses. There is a trend towards printing on a much broader set of media—and with inkjet technology being able to print at a quality level much closer to offset—paper manufacturers one noticeable difference: a new face at the helm. As the new president of both NPES and the Graphic Arts Show Company, Thayer Long has a laundry list of goals he is hoping to accomplish, as well as solid expectations that both attendees and exhibitors at this year’s GRAPH EXPO will be able to learn, engage, and have some fun. We sat down with Long to discuss his expectations, GRAPH EXPO 16 highlights, and how visitors can take full advantage of all the event has to offer.
