Visual Image Photography Goes Digital with HP and Duplo DC-646 Slitter/ Cutter/Creaser After 25 years of using silver halide technology for their professional portraiture, Visual Image Photography in Cedarburg, WI decided it was time for a change. VIP, which offers schools throughout Wisconsin and Illinois class and senior portraits, as well as sports photography, searched for a digital press that could print high quality photo applications comparable to their silver halide equipment. It was time to make a transition to digital print, and after much research along with a trip to Dscoop, the studio moved forward with the installation of the HP (Booth 1825) Indigo 5600 last summer, and they could not be more pleased. “The quality level of digital printing is fi nally here,” comments Courtney Lutz, owner of VIP. “The transition has been amazing. We are very happy with the process and it’s been excellent for our customers.” To round out their new digital operation, the studio followed with the Duplo (Booth 2025) DC-646 Slitter/Cutter/Creaser and 350i Digital Booklet System. The all-inone DC-646 made it easier to fi nish some of their full-bleed photo items, such as trading cards, which had previously required multiple steps. On the 350i Digital Booklet System, all of their photo booklets are fed through the DSF-2200 Sheet Feeder, stitched, and given a fl at, square back fi nish with the DSS-350 Square Spine module. The barcode reader has provided an extra level of confi dence by ensuring personalized photo booklets are processed with complete integrity and accuracy. Josh Steuerwald, Production Manager at VIP, adds, “The Duplo equipment has really benefi tted our operation in that we’re able to take products that would have multiple steps, a real lengthy process, and fi nish them in one or two steps. It’s created a huge effi ciency for our company.” VIP keeps busy running a wide variety of jobs throughout the school year, yet also covers youth sports leagues, state fi nals, corporate events and weddings. Going digital with HP and Duplo has taken VIP to the next level, helping them get it all done in shorter turnarounds and less downtime. Caskey Group Delivers Print Products Using LEDUV Printing from RMGT Headquartered in York, PA, The Caskey Group is an integrated marketing and communications fi rm offering full offset and digital communication services. Founded as a commercial printing company, Caskey Printing began adding in-house mailing, bindery, and digital printing services to fulfi ll its clients’ print-based communications needs. As new technologies emerged, Caskey added online marketing tools to complement its clients’ printed communications. Today, LED-UV printing is considered the fastest growing process technology in the sheet-fed offset printing market. In keeping with this growth, the Caskey Group has successfully implemented the RMGT (Booth 1201) 5 Series offset press, featuring LED-UV curing technology. “At Caskey, our goal is to help our customers build and strengthen their own brands by offering products and services that will help them to stand out in their markets,” states Tony Rife, President, Caskey Group. “With LED-UV technology added to our mix of high-quality printing capabilities, Caskey will be positioned to offer customers new and innovative print applications at a lower cost, all while reducing energy consumption and adding to our overall capacity.” “We are able to offer our clients a product that has special chemical embossing thanks to the LED-UV curing technology on the RMGT press,” continues Rife. On the print manufacturing side, instant drying allows jobs to move immediately to fi nishing, and eliminates powder contamination. Rife also states that “UV inks are solvent-free, and when cured with LED-UV lighting, the entire process generates no byproducts and is free of emissions.” “The rapid growth of LED-UV printing can be attributed to the additional print capabilities that this technology offers,” states Jim Lundy of G.E. Richards, the northeast distributor for RMGT in the US. “In conventional offset printing, inks dry as their binding agents oxidize and get absorbed into the printing substrate or the process can be sped up by introducing heat. In contrast, UV printing uses specially formulated inks that are exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. This allows instant drying at each printing unit of the press. When LED technology is used for UV lighting, the overall benefi ts to printers are immense.” The RMGT 525GX LED-UV Press is a fi ve color press with anilox roller coater and represents the top of the line in the 5 Series presses from RMGT. With a maximum paper size of 520 x 375 mm, the press can reach printing speeds of up to 15,000 sheets per hour. The eco-friendly LED-UV printing system offers impressive energy savings and superior ease of use. This system not only greatly reduces energy consumption but also features a much longer lifespan than a conventional lamp type system. This next-generation system produces minimal heat and no ozone, making it very eco-friendly. 38 | September 26, 2016 | GRAPH EXPO 16 Offi cial Show Daily | PrintingNews.com
