Landmark “State of the Industry” In-Plant Study Published at GRAPH EXPO What is the current state of in-plant printing departments? What are their top opportunities, and their top challenges? What is their current product and service mix, and how have those items been changing over the years? These and dozens of other questions are answered in a new study called The State of the In-Plant Industry—Outlook, Challenges, and Opportunities, written by industry analysts Dr. Joseph Webb and Richard Romano, published by the In- Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA) (Booth 2425) and sponsored by Canon USA (Booth 1500). This landmark report appears for the fi rst time at GRAPH EXPO 16. The result of an extensive online survey of IPMA’s membership, as well as that of the industry associations, The State of the In-Plant Industry—Outlook, Challenges, and Opportunities offers the most comprehensive profi le of today’s in-plant printing industry. Survey respondents represent inplants in such diverse areas as K-12 and higher education; local, state, and federal government; hospital and medical, including pharmaceutical; non-profi t charitable, fraternal, or religious organizations; trade associations, chambers of commerce, and similar organizations; and a broad variety of profi t-focused manufacturing, service, and professional entities. The study looks at in-plant operations, their equipment, and the products and services they offer; how revenues and budgets have changed in the past several years; how many and what kinds of employees they hire; their relationships with their parent organizations; and the volume of work they both outsource to external vendors and take in from outside customers. According to the study, top-of-mind issues plaguing today’s in-plant managers include proving their value and relevance to the parent organization, coping with an aging and retiring workforce, keeping up with technology, and proving the environmental sustainability of print and paper. “Running a successful print operation is challenging enough in today’s landscape,” write the authors, “but when survival is based on the full breadth of value that a parent organization may or may not recognize, the challenges can become compounded. Despite this, surveyed in-plant departments are doing reasonably well.” “This report gives IPMA member inplants the benchmark data they can use to compare themselves to similar operations,” says Dr. Joe Webb, co-author of the report. “It also gives in-plants ideas for ensuring their survival as the media change within their parent organizations.” IPMA is hosting the In-Plant Place on the show fl oor at Booth 2425, and the conclusions and recommendations identifi ed in the study will be presented at a special IPMA luncheon today from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm in Room N310EF. The luncheon is sponsored by Canon USA, Ricoh (Booth 2035), Rochester Software Associates (Booth 2067), and XMPie (Booth 1625). Allied Printing Services Inks drupa Contract for New KBA Rapida 106 Press KBA Group President and CEO Claus Bolza-Schünemann (right), congratulates John Sommers, President and CEO of Allied Printing Services (left) on the purchase of its fourth new KBA Rapida 106 press. At drupa, Allied Printing Services, a full service commercial/fi nancial printing fi rm located in Manchester, CT, agreed to purchase its fourth new KBA (Booth 1435) Rapida 106 41" 6-color, high-performance press equipped with UV and conventional coating, and running speeds of 20,000 sph. John Sommers, President and CEO of Allied Printing Services, met with KBA executives in early June to ink the contract. The new press will be delivered in the fall of 2016. “We are excited to install our fourth KBA Rapida 106 press in the last four years,” says Sommers. “We have seen increased demand for UV printing and coating. We have reacted to our customers’ needs with this capital expenditure which will increase our UV capacity, giving our customers exactly what they are asking for while, allowing for increased productivity and fl exibility in press approval schedules.” The new KBA Rapida press will join three additional high-performance KBA Rapida presses that print sheet sizes up to 29x41" at Allied’s 285,000 square foot facility. One of its KBA machines is a hybrid UV press, with the ability to run and cure UV inks in any unit with overall and spot UV coating. Its current fl eet of KBA presses has inline color management and register control to ensure consistent quality, can handle a wide range of printing substrates from lightweight plastics to heavy board, and provides Allied with faster turnarounds with automated inline systems such as color control, automatic register, and auto plate changing; and a direct pro-environmental impact. Production Inkjet Luncheon at GRAPH EXPO 16 Marco Boer presents a “State of the Production Inkjet Market” and leads printer panel. Host Marco Boer, noted analyst at IT Strategies, will present a “State of the Production Inkjet Market” and then lead an interactive printer panel discussion with some leading inkjet technology end users. This luncheon, today from NAPCO Media, from 12:00 - 1:00 pm in the North Hall - Rooms N310AB, will provide an excellent opportunity to learn about the latest trends in highspeed production inkjet technology and hear real-life, candid experiences from printers who have implemented inkjet technology in their operations.
