It has an abundance of new features, but perhaps the most signifi cant is a new module called the Nesting Optimization Engine. In wide-format, label and packaging, and other kinds of specialty printing, the process of orienting all the images in order to fi t as many as possible on a single sheet is called nesting optimization. Traditionally done laboriously by hand in a program like Adobe Illustrator, advanced shape nesting can now be done automatically via Impostrip’s Nesting Optimization Engine. Square or rectangular shapes are easy to orient on a sheet or board, but circles, ovals, triangles, and irregular shapes like fi sh, guitars, or Donald Trump’s head present problems for optimal nesting, hence the Nesting Optimization Engine’s ability to generate “smart nests” without manual intervention. The Nesting Optimization Engine module is being offi cially released at GRAPH EXPO 16, and will be shipping immediately after the show. Other new features in Impostrip 10 include new stacking options for unattended book printing; an automated imposition Finding Tomorrow’s Talent The skilled workforce shortage that continues to plague the U.S. has not left the print industry unscathed. According to The Manufacturing Institute, a foundation of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), over 82% of manufacturers reported moderate to serious skills shortages of skilled talent (Source: The Manufacturing Institute’s 2015 Skills Gap Report, tinyurl.com/2015-SkillsGap). The Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF) (Booth 564), formed in 1983 by Idealliance (Booth 1009), NPES (Booth 700), and Printing Industries of America (Booth 1425), offers several programs designed to assist print industry employers meet their manpower needs of tomorrow. PrintED is the “fl agship” national accreditation program for secondary and post-secondary schools that offer graphic communications curricula. Based on industry-developed standards and competency areas, the PrintED program offers accreditation in these areas: Introduction to Graphic Communications; Digital File Preparation and Output; Digital Production Printing; Graphic Design; Offset Press Operations/Bindery & Finishing; and Screen Printing. Currently 137 schools are PrintEd accredited, or in the process of being accredited, in 25 states. Next, through a partnership between GAERF and SkillsUSA, students have the opportunity to earn a credential, through a series of skill assessments, that validate their mastery of academic and workplace competencies. During the 2014-15 school year over 7,000 students took these assessments. Most recently, via the support of the Printing and Graphics Association of Mid-Atlantic (PGAMA), GAERF is midway through updating the assessments to ensure they are current with today’s industry standards. As you consider your hiring challenges, visit GAERF online: gaerf.org/About.aspx for more information about local schools that could be training your next employee! And, to reach out to connect with these talented students, visit list of PrintED accredited schools: gaerf.org/PrintED/AccreditedPrograms.aspx. GAERF is dedicated to advancing knowledge and education in the fi eld of graphic communications by supporting programs that prepare the workforce of the future. Ultimate Technographics is also showing updates to its Ultimate Bindery fi nishing automation system includes support for Standard Finishing’s (Booth 1548) Horizon SmartSlitter, the Horizon HT1000V three-knife trimmer for on-demand book production, the Watkiss PowerSquare 224 booklet-maker, and even—via the Colter & Peterson (Booth 2639) Microcut Plus back gauge retrofi t kit—a JDF interface for guillotine cutters. Essentially, Ultimate Bindery allows users to set all the fi nishing parameters during the prepress stage, and all this job ticket information follows the job through the system via JDF, where the data is used to automatically set up the fi nishing device(s). 22 | September 27, 2016 | GRAPH EXPO 16 Offi cial Show Daily | PrintingNews.com
