KBA and Xerox Join Forces to Offer the “Best of Both Worlds” Attendees to GRAPH EXPO 16 can see the North American debut of a unique joint venture of KBA (Booth 1435) and Xerox (Booth 1625): the VariJET 160 Powered by Xerox. Targeted at the folding carton printing market, the new press is, said Maik Laubin, Vice President Digital Solutions, KBA, in a press conference held yesterday, “a Rapida with a digital heart.” Recognizing that packaging in general is a substantially growing part of the industry, that digital packaging printing represents a huge opportunity, and that digital packaging printing is still in its very early stages, KBA felt the time was ripe for a hybrid press that offers KBA's Eric Frank (left) and Claus Bolza- the quality of offset printing using Xerox’s Impika inkjet technology. Schünemann (right) discuss the company's latest “We see packaging as a major opportunity,” added Robert Stabler, Senior Vice President, Graphic Communication Business, Xerox. At products, including the new VariJET 160 Powered the same time, he said, “run lengths are coming down, and demand by Xerox hybrid press. for versioning is growing.” The VariJET 160 will go into beta sites in 2017 and is expected to be commercially available sometime in 2018. “We’re looking into a prosperous future with our core business of ‘ink on anything,’” said Claus Bolza-Schünemann, President and CEO of Koenig & Bauer AG. Indeed, next year, KBA will celebrate its 200th anniversary. “We’re proud to be here in Orlando with a big booth, and we’re proud to support our industry,” said Eric Frank, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Product Development, KBA North America. “We give back to the industry, and that’s why we’re 200 years strong.” Epson Adds New Standard Proofi ng Paper Epson (Booth 2649) introduced the newest addition to its product portfolio of proofi ng papers— the Standard Proofing Paper Premium. The paper is one of the fi rst to meet, or exceed the GRACoL 2017 / Fogra 52 certifi cations. “With the increase in popularity of press stocks with high Optical Brightening Agents (OBAs), the industry has been looking for a proofi ng paper that produces a close match between the color proof and the press stock with little to no additional paper tinting,” says Jeffrey Smith, Product Manager, Epson America. “This paper meets this requirement and is manufactured to meet extremely demanding industry expectations for color accurate contract proofs.” “As a member of the Idealliance + Epicomm Print Properties committee, the Committee of Graphic Arts Technology Standards (CGATS), and the Flexographic Technical Association (FTA), I have seen fi rsthand where the industry is experiencing more issues with proof to press matches since the introduction of the new lighting standard in 2009,” says Roy Bohnen, Account Manager, Proofing, Epson America. “Epson is addressing this by exceeding the proposed guidelines and offering a proofi ng media that aligns with the higher levels of OBA content on press stocks, creating the desired proof to press visualization, and proof to press measurements that can be certifi ed with proof verifi cation software.” Epson Standard Proofing Paper Premium will be available in October 2016 through authorized Epson resellers in common widths of 17", 24", and 44", as well as 13x19" sheets. The papers are available in a 10 mil caliper of 250 gsm weight and a 8 mil caliper of 200 gsm weight. Offi cial Show Daily | PrintingNews.com GRAPH EXPO 16 | September 27, 2016 | 49
