QLINE Grand Opening
Th e QLINE opened to the public Friday, May 12. Th e streetcar is a 6.6-mile
loop serving 12 locations on Woodward Avenue from downtown Detroit
through Midtown, New Center and the North End.
QLINE is opened and operated by M-1 RAIL, which is a non-profi t organization
formed in 2007 to lead the design, construction and operation
of a modern streetcar system in Detroit.
In its fi rst week of operations, QLINE had nearly 50,000 riders, averaging
more than 7,140 riders daily. Th e fares will be $1.50 for three hours; 75 cents
for seniors, disabled riders and Medicare cardholders; $3 for day passes; $30
for a monthly pass and $285 for an annual pass.

DESIGNED AND manufactured by Brookville Equipment Corp., the QLINE vehicles
will traverse without the aid of an overhead contact system (OCS) for 60
percent of the route, instead using the Liberty Streetcar’s battery onboard
energy storage system (OESS).
Autonomous Bus Program
▶ Proterra announced it is initiating an autonomous
bus program with the University
of Nevada, Reno and its Living Lab Coalition
partners, which includes the Regional
Transportation Commission of Washoe
County, the Nevada Department of Motor
Vehicles, the Nevada Governor’s Offi ce for
Economic Development, Fraunhofer Institute
for Transportation and Infrastructure
Systems IVI, and the cities of Reno, Sparks
and Carson City, Nevada.
The pilot will also explore a new set
of robotic perception algorithms that are
required to address these conditions, and
focus on tight cues from multi-modal
sensors and new multi-modal localization
and mapping.
