RYAN NAWROCKI WORKED ON CAPitol
Hill doing public relations for two
diff erent members of Congress before
coming to the Maryland Transit Administration
in January 2016.
Since his arrival, his communications
and marketing eff orts have resulted in
unprecedented growth in the number of
platforms utilized to reach MTA riders
and potential customers, re-defi ned and
enhanced the mission of communications
and marketing within the MTA,
and created an impressive response of
the agency’s external and internal customers
to those eff orts.
Nawrocki has stepped up the MTA’s
eff orts to increase the agency’s social
media presence through a greater frequency
of postings, a focus on more engaging
posts and an enhanced reliance
on video to tell the MTA story. While
social media is vital, the agency continues
to expand its outreach to engage
customers in unique and meaningful
ways, including monthly scheduled TV
appearances for the administrator on

TV show, produced entirely

by MDOT MTA staff , and monthly columns
by the administrator in numerous
publications in Baltimore.
In March 2016, under his leadership,
the MTA launched an FM radio station
featuring a format of smooth jazz enhanced
by transit and traffi c updates and
re-purposed features and packages from
the MTA television show, “Commuter
Connections.” Th e reach of the station has
been enhanced through expansion of its
audience by playing it on MDOT MTA
rail platforms throughout Baltimore.
Th e MDOT MTA Offi ce of Communications
& Marketing was recognized
for the establishment of the MDOT
MTA FM radio station and for the development
of a social media video announcing
the launch of the Purple Line.

“This is one of those industries where you literally impact
people’s lives on a very granular level every single day. What
we do is extremely mea ningful; we’re getting people to jobs,
school, and healthcare and all of those kinds of things that can
have a dramatic impact on people’s lives. If we weren’t here,
if we weren’t doing a good job, the community would feel it.”

Katie Miller came from the healthcare
industry and knew very little
about the transit industry when she
came onboard. But being a part of an
industry that moves people and goods
safely and reliably drew her to be a part
of the railway industry.
She joined ERICO Rail Solutions in
2015, taking on a newly created position
that gave her the opportunity to learn
and grow in the railway industry with a
reputable brand on a global scale.
One of her primary contributions
to the rail industry over the last year
was helping to introduce and launch
a new, exothermic welding product.
It was developed to simplify the
method of installing exothermically
welded electrical connections on the
rail and railway properties. It exceeds
requirements of railroad and transit
properties around the world, as well
as American Railway Engineering and
Maintenance-of-Way Association and
Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers recommendations.
Miller is committed to providing
the global railway industry with
thought leadership content through
e-newsletters, interactive videos, social
media and more.
She has shown solid leadership skills
through strategic thinking, having a
big-picture perspective and discovering
interrelationships between business
segments, keeping up to date on
emerging trends in the economy and
industry, having a global perspective,
and developed relationships and consulted
with key stakeholders across
departments and business units in an
eff ort to educate herself and help establish
herself as a trusted team player
and leader.
Miller has shown determination and
resilience in learning about the global
rail industry and helping advance the
future of rail.
