President, and a strong Export-Import
(Exim) Bank to help U.S. exporters be
competitive in global markets. As the
Trump Administration now looks to
renegotiate the North American Free
Trade Agreement (NAFTA), NPES will
follow this process closely, which could
result in new trade agreements with
Canada and Mexico, two important
markets for NPES members.
Q: How involved is the print community
in the legislative efforts of
the associations on their behalf?
Nuzzaco: Th e printing, imaging, and
mailing industry is a huge sector of the
economy, which has been variously
measured at $1.4 billion annually, and
employs more than 7.5 million workers.
Th is is a scale of magnitude comparable
to other large industry sectors. But unfortunately,
it seems not to be perceived
as such. Perhaps it is because there are
many voices speaking without enough
coordination or uniformity. Some might
say the industry is “punching below its
weight” because of this. While there is a
core cadre of active industry executives
who have the vision of the importance
of active advocacy on government
policy that impacts their businesses
and the printing, imaging, and mailing
industry in general, many more voices
are needed to join the eff ort, including
rank in fi le employees who are educated
in how government policy aff ects
their livelihoods.
Q: What steps should printers take
if they want to get more educated
or involved in the process?
Nuzzaco: NPES would urge its members
and others in the printing, imaging, and
mailing industry to avail themselves
of the government aff airs advocacy information
disseminated by their trade
associations as a starting point. Coming
to Washington, D. C. to participate in an
industry “Fly-In” could be the next step.
And, having elected offi cials visit their
plants is perhaps the most eff ective way
of educating lawmakers about issues of
importance to industry.
