Executive Suite: S-R or R-S Are you in control of your reactions or do they control you? Today our discussion takes a psychological twist. It is simple but profound. In fact, it is so profound one could argue that the distinction of which we speak here can be the dividing line between eff ective and ineff ective occupants of the Executive Suite. It is all about the order of two letters S and R—Stimulus and Response. Most of us have been reared on the notion that life consists of a series of stimuli and responses. Something happens (S) and we respond to that event (R). In business, however, things become more complex. For most people, certainly most of the people in your business, the focus is on the S—the event, circumstance, or situation. In fact, that is oft en the entire focus with little attention paid to response. Successful people understand that pleasant and unpleasant experiences are part of everyone’s life. Successful people do not focus on the S. It is all about their “Rs.” Th ey realize we are dealt some cards and how we play those hands will tell the successful or unsuccessful tale. So, the measure is in how we respond to people and circumstances, not the people or circumstances themselves. Unsuccessful people simply do not “get” this. Th ey allow the external environment to drive everything, especially their moods and feelings. Th is distinction is critical for owners and managers to understand. Being in charge means being the dumping ground for the problems in the business. Th e fi rst step in eff ective problem-solving is to embrace the reality that solving problems is what you do. Your employees are more likely among the masses for whom people “make them feel happy, bummed out, or angry.” Th ere is one trick available in the bag, however. One female executive shaped her people in a problem solving rather than problem complaining direction. Whenever an employee came to see her, she would tell them they had X number of minutes to describe the problem, and two times x minutes to focus on possible solutions. It was amazingly eff ective. Put a big R and S in your offi ce. It will remind you of what you do and it will be an excellent attention-getter to start your people in a new direction.
