ExxonMobil Talks
Trends Around the
New Oils and What’s Next
XX
1997 2017
ANNIVERSARY
Nearly a year after the
introduction of the
new PC-11 engine oils,
Fleet Maintenance sat
down with Paul Cigala,
commercial vehicle
lubricants application
engineer at ExxonMobil,
to talk about what
ȵHHWVLQWKHLQGXVWU\
have done to make the
most of the new oils,
and where he sees the
industry headed in both
the short and long term.
FM: What trends have
\RXQRWLFHGDVȵHHWV
and owner operators
make the switch to the
new oils?
Cigala: Nearly one year
after the new oil formulations
were introduced,
ZHȇYHVHHQPDQ\ȵHHWV
take advantage of the
transition to re-evaluate
and improve their
maintenance practices
WRLQFUHDVHHɝFLHQF\
across the board.
The most common trend
we’re seeing among
ȵHHWVLVWKHGHVLUHWR
take full advantage of
the new oils’ ability to
extend their oil drain
intervals – and many
have seen great results.
This has allowed them
to keep their trucks on
the road longer, minimizing
downtime and
maintenance costs and

meeting both operational
goals and the needs
of their customers.
FM: What has
ExxonMobil done to
KHOSȵHHWVPDNHWKH
most of the transition?
Cigala: One of the main
ways we’ve been able
WRKHOSȵHHWVPDNHWKLV
adjustment is through
our Optimized Oil Drain
Interval program, which
is a four-step process
that leverages used oil
analysis to help identify
the optimal preventative
maintenance service
schedule for that specif-

The program involves
four key steps:
1. Feasibility Analysis –
identify improvement
opportunities and

test protocol.
2. Documenting
Performance via Field
Testing –collect data

3. Evaluating Results –
leverage ExxonMobil’s
unique capabilities to
analyze the collected

ODI recommendations.
4. Staying Connected
– ensure continuous
monitoring of the
program, as well
as education and
training.
The last step – staying
connected – is particularly
important. In order
to see continued bene-

intervals and identify
ongoing opportunities

must continue to moni-

mance through services
like regular used oil
analysis.
FM: What are some
of the trends you see
shaping the industry in
the near future?
Cigala: For the foreseeable
future, Diesel will
continue to be the most
widely used engine technology
for a number of
years to come.
We will see OEMs
continuing to focus on
introducing engines
that deliver greater fuel
HFRQRPLHVDQGRHU
the potential to reduce
emissions, typically
through the incorporation
of aftermarket
treatment devices. And
with the way OEMs are
designing these newer
engines, it’s pretty
clear that aftertreatment
is something
that’s here to stay, as

At ExxonMobil, we are
actively involved in
supporting these types
of technology advancements,
working closely
with various strategic
partners.
