The Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) of American Trucking Associations is proposing adoption of the following Recommended Practices.
• Proposed RP 129B(T), Heavy Duty Vehicle
Cranking and Charging Troubleshooting: 12-
Volt Systems. This Recommended Practice (RP)
provides a sequential procedure for evaluating/
troubleshooting the electrical charging/cranking
systems of heavy-duty vehicles during a pilot
review, preventive maintenance inspection
(PMI), and/or repair/diagnostic procedure.
• Proposed RP 181(T), Solar Panel Installation,
Safety and Preventive Maintenance Inspection
Guidelines. This RP offers installation, safety
and PMI guidelines for solar panels (affi xed or
portable) and related equipment used in heavyduty
commercial service.
• Proposed RP 214E(T), Tire/Wheel Balance and
Runout. This RP provides information about
the damage that results in undersized bead seats
on steel and aluminum disc wheels (including
dual and wide-base), which may result in an
explosive separation of the tire from the wheel.
• Proposed RP 216D(T), Radial Tire Conditions
Analysis Guide. This RP is designed to be a
reference source and a training aid to assist
users in tire grading.
• Proposed RP 219D(T), Radial Tire Wear
Conditions and Causes: A Guide to Wear
Pattern Analysis. This RP assists in identifying
radial tire wear patterns and determining causes
which can then be corrected to minimize
irregular wear.
• Proposed RP 222D(T), Users’ Guide to Wheels
and Rims. This RP provides maintenance and
installation procedures for medium and heavy
truck wheels and rims as well as for some
of the tools/systems required to install them
properly on transport equipment.
• Proposed RP 236B(T), Outsourcing Guidelines
for Tire and Wheel Maintenance. This RP is
designed to help fl eet managers make decisions
regarding outsourcing of tire and/or wheel
maintenance.
• Proposed RP 337C(T), Troubleshooting Low
Power Complaints. This RP offers useful tips
for determining low-power complaints for
Class 7 and 8 vehicles.
• Proposed RP 342A(T), Guidelines for
Recording Electronic Engine Parameter
Changes. This RP describes various methods
for preventing unwanted or unauthorized
parameter changes.
• Proposed RP 344A(T), Understanding Engine
ECM Data. This RP is designed to help
equipment users better understand and use data
captured from an engine’s electronic control
module (ECM).
• Proposed RP 347B(T), Fan Drive Maintenance
and Troubleshooting. This RP provides
maintenance and diagnostic information for fan
drive systems used in medium- and heavy-duty
commercial vehicles.
• Proposed RP 351A(T), Guidelines for
Color Standardization of Engine/Coolant
Antifreeze. This RP offers guidelines for color
standardization of engine antifreeze/coolants
based on antifreeze type.
• Proposed RP 373(T), Diesel Exhaust Fluid
System Maintenance. This RP offers guidelines
for inspecting and maintaining diesel exhaust
fl uid (DEF) systems used on heavy-duty
commerical vehicles.
• Proposed RP 428B(T), Guidelines for Vision
Devices. This RP specifi es minimum driver
vision requirements, and suggests means of
achieving these requirements.
• Proposed RP 633A(T), Effects of Drivetrain
Torsionals. This RP covers drivetrain torsional
issues that must be considered when specifying
drivetrains.
• Proposed RP 641B(T), Maintenance Guidelines
for Hydraulically Activated Clutches. This RP
provides guidelines for the proper maintenance
of medium- and heavy-duty hydraulic clutch
control systems.
• Proposed RP 656A(T), Hub and Spoke
Wheel Fastener Maintenance. This RP offers
maintenance guidelines for hub and spoke
wheel fasteners for driven and non-driven
wheel ends used on Class 6-8 commercial
vehicles.
• Proposed RP 702D(T), Trailer Lamp and
Refl ector Replacement. This RP identifi es
specifi c areas for locating marker, clearance,
identifi cation, antilock braking system (ABS),
stop, tail, and turn lamps that must be used to
fulfi ll the purpose.
• Proposed RP 722B(T), Large Vehicle
Conspicuity Markings. This RP establishes
the minimum design, confi guration, and
dimensional criteria for refl ective marking
systems to improve the night conspicuity of
large commercial vehicles.
• Proposed RP 748(T), Trailer Refrigeration Unit
Preventive Maintenance Inspection Guidelines.
This RP offers guidelines for the PMI of
trailer refrigeration units used in heavy-duty
commercial service.
• Proposed RP 752A(T), Forklift Preventive
Maintenance Inspection Guidelines. This RP
offers guidelines for establishing a consistent
and standardized preventive maintenance
inspection program for forklifts.
• Proposed RP 1615(T), Parts Core Management
for Service Providers. This RP offers general
guidelines for the proper and effective handling
of core claims.
Any party may submit a written request of
appeal of a proposed Recommended Practice
(RP). However, the request must be received
by the Technology & Maintenance Council
within 90 days of publication of this notice. If
no appeals are made at the end of the 90 days,
the RP will be formally adopted by TMC. (The
suffi x “T” indicates an RP is proposed.)
With the printing of this issue of Fleet Maintenance,
the following RPs are now open to the 90-
