CERTIFICATION & INSTALLATION
regardless of country of origin. It is up to
you (as the purchaser) to make sure the
lift s you buy are certifi ed.
Building Codes
Check your local building code requirements.
Th e International Building Code,
which is in use or adopted by all 50 U.S.
states, requires that all installed vehicle
lift s conform with ANSI/ALI ALCTV. So,
if you’re having a lift installed in an area
covered by the International Building Code,
you must choose an ALI-certifi ed lift .
Each Canadian province also has its
own specifi c building code requirements
which must be satisfi ed.
Remember to check with local code
enforcement offi cials if you are unsure of
the requirements. Should you fi nd the code
department does not have experience in
the area of permitting newly purchased
or relocated vehicle lift s, a visit to the ALI
website or a call by the code offi cer could
be helpful in avoiding unnecessary expense
Lifts that wear the gold
ALI certification label have been
third-party tested by one of
three authorized testing labs
and are proven to meet all the
requirements of North America’s
applicable electrical and
mechanical safety standards.

Accessories
Many people don’t realize
that lift options and
accessories are approved
for use with specifi c lift
models. Approved options
and accessories are
also subject to third-party
testing and certifi cation.
Use of non-certifi ed
options or accessories on
a certifi ed lift will void the
lift ’s certifi cation for as long as the original
confi guration remains altered. Be sure to
order the certifi ed accessories your technicians
need for each lift .
A list of accessories certifi ed for use
with each lift is listed in the ALI Directory
of Certifi ed Lift s.
2. Use a qualified installer
Because proper installation is crucial to
the safe operation of your vehicle lift s, have
your lift s installed by someone who has
been properly trained to do so. Th e ANSI/
ALI ALIS (current edition), Standard for
Automotive Lift s Safety Requirements for
Installation and Service, outlines installer
qualifi cations, including formal training
