Coolers (right) and pedicabs (left) are among the many items that can be wrapped using digital technology. ics, comes to the table with myriad applications, many of which have been seen by millions. “Aside from the bulky fleet/commercial wraps, we have applied our graphic installation skills to high-end specialty/custom wraps such as on various musical instruments and ‘picture cars’ for television commercials and photo shoots. Our work has been featured on the Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards, ACM’s, The MTV Video Awards, and American Idol. From Jennifer Lopez to Miranda Lambert to Pharrell, our experience in this type of wrap includes pianos, amps, guitars, cellos, drums, violins, classic organs, etc.” Tour also offered this advice: “I would say to test the film on that intended, unconventional surface first by wrapping a section of it to see how the film reacts and looks...obviously the project bulletin of graphic manufacturer should explain all of this in detail. Even if we supply our client with a schematic, photos or a rendering of the project, they are visual in the sense that they want to actually see the film on the substrate. We either do a prototype or wrap a small section of that surface for them.” Products, Prep and Tips As with installing any kind of adhesive, wraps can be tricky and often require special products such as knives, rollers, and heat sources. Tips such as proper prep and testing adhesives before wrapping can also save valuable time and money. Tour stated, “Be patient, prepared and meticulous with entertainment-based projects. For instance, you are usually dealing with a ton of people who all need to signoff on the color or design of the wrap or decal alignments (especially for the readings or taglines). The client is expecting these ‘picture cars’ or instrument wraps to be flawless, seamless and camera-ready.” Frego said, “When dealing with unconventional surfaces you must make sure you have the proper equipment and material to start. We use a Mutoh ValueJet 1624; the material will depend on what type of surface we are wrapping. When we install on usual surfaces you also have to make sure you have the installation tools. You will want to have a roller like a Rolle Pro and other rollers that can help with any uneven surfaces or area that stick out like rivets. I always make sure that I have a roll of Knifeless tape that will help keep all your cuts perfect especially in areas that are hard to reach or need to curve just right and not damage the area or item being wrapped.” “It’s important to become familiar with the different types of wrap that are out there,” said Hawkes. “For a quality wrap, it is almost always exclusively a cast product. It costs a little bit more, but retains its shape and is more durable with wrap technology. A high quality wide-format printer or printer/cutter is also essential to create the detailed, vibrant prints required for an exceptional wrap. Just as important as using quality media and digital printers is the skill level of the wrap designer and installer.” Icon Image Graphics used it’s Mutoh printer to wrap Jack White’s piano for the 2014 Grammy Awards.
