Cuomo celebrated the on-time arrival of the Second Avenue Subway — the system’s fi rst major expansion in more than 50 years – with the line’s inaugural ride. Th e Second Avenue Subway began revenue service January 1. Th e bright, spacious new Second Avenue Subway stations feature access for the disabled, climate control features to maximize comfort, high ceilings and column-free design for an open, airy atmosphere. A two-tiered mezzanine design is a fi xture of the new stations and improves the fl ow of riders, reduces crowding on the platform and enhances the overall subway experience for riders. In addition, Outfront Media completed the installation of On Smart Liveboards across 24 additional rail stations in the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s metrorail system. MassTransitmag.com/12288677 PVTA Introduces Battery-Electric Buses ▶ Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA) has purchased three 40-foot Catalyst FC battery-electric buses, two fast chargers and one depot charger. In addition to MassDOT funds, PVTA purchased the Proterra Catalyst FC buses with funds from the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Transit Administration. PVTA MassTransitmag.com/12288280 Alstom Invests in EasyMile ▶ Alstom is investing €14 million ($15 million) in EasyMile, a start-up company developing the EZ10 electric driverless shuttle. Alstom and EasyMile have also signed a commercial partnership agreement aiming at joining their forces to provide integrated solutions for urban transportation. CTDOT Awards 5-Year Contract ▶ Motor Coach Industries (MCI), a subsidiary of New Flyer Industries Inc. announced the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has awarded a 5-year contract for up to 112 MCI Commuter Coaches, with an approximate value of $56 million. MassTransitmag.com/12294700 EACH BUS will displace 243,980 pounds of carbon dioxide annually for every diesel bus replacement. SamTrans Begins Work on San Carlos Transit Center Project ▶ On December 27, SamTrans began construction of the San Carlos Multi-Modal Transit Center Project, located on the west side of the railroad corridor at the site of the existing San Carlos Caltrain Station. Work on the Transit Center Project is expected to last until July 2017. The project consists of transforming the existing San Carlos Caltrain Station parking lot into a multi-modal transit center that will better serve the community by improving safety and accessibility between SamTrans fi xed-route bus services, Caltrain commuter rail services, local shuttles, pedestrians and bicyclists.
