Davidoff said that the timing
of alerts from Railigent depends
on how things fail. “Assets don’t
fail so quickly that it takes you by
surprise so you don’t necessarily
need instantaneous alerts ... You
might need some aspects of real
time alerts, but more oft en or
not there is a maintenance intervention
they can reach it in time
to schedule maintenance ... and
everything is fi ne.”
Diff erent assets fail in diff erent
ways, some off er days to act
rather than weeks. Bearings can be
detected very early before failure
with good accuracy, which means
that you could have weeks to react.
When looking at Uptime maintenance
personnel, see whatever
work has been done in the past.
“Th e tool actually highlights
inconsistencies,” Schubs explained.
Uptime reasons that a
certain part could have broken
due to another part. “All of this is
included coded in the analytics.
We tell you what’s wrong and what
to do about it, but also predictive.”
Further Developing
the Technology
Davidoff explained that Siemens is
always looking to further develop its
intelligence data and the algorithms
in the program continue to develop.
“We have to separate a little
bit between collecting the data —
which there are a lot of diff erent
ways. It could be video, vibration

or temperature senors or it could
be other data factors operating
around weather or other operational
factors,” said Davidoff . “Th ere is a
whole slew of things that we’ll have
to build to refl ect what is happening
in the world.”
Davidoff said that the benefi t really
lies in how the predictive technology
really optimizes rail fl eets
and maintenance on them.
“Th ere are studies out there that
show having a predictive maintenance
approach is a lot more cost effective
than a time-based program,”
said Davidoff . “Th at’s really the holy
grail of maintenance dollars, is to
spend it where it’s needed and not
really spend it ineffi ciently. If you’re
taking a vehicle and based on time,
you might not need to go into that
shop at the point, the ability to optimize
your maintenance time and
your spare parts needed.”
