Detecting a passive
A/C system leak
Vehicle: 2011 Cadillac SRX
Symptom: Air conditioning system
does not cool
Tools Used:
• Service Information
• RRR (Recover/Recycle/
Recharge) machine with
vacuum test capabilities
• Electronic leak detector
• UV dye kit
• Bullseye Leak Detector
This vehicle was brought in with
an air conditioning system that was not
cooling properly. The initial inspection
showed that the compressor was not
operating.
Step 1: Confirm basic operating
conditions are present
The basic components for compressor
operation are:

Mechanical (the compressor), electrical
(power to the compressor) and
pressure (amount of refrigerant).
This vehicle, like most late-model
vehicles, utilizes the BCM (Body Control
Module) and PCM (Powertrain Control
Module) to supply power to the A/C
compressor. The control modules look
for a request from the switch as well as
various temperature sensors and inputs
from other sensors to make sure the
pressures within the system meet certain
requirements in order to activate the
compressor. This is done in part to make
sure damage to the A/C system will not
occur if oil is not flowing through the
system. Oil flows through the system
via the refrigerant. So if the refrigerant
is low, essential lubrication cannot occur.

FIND AND PERMANENTLY
STOP A/C LEAKS
The CPS Automotive LeakGuard OneShot
A/C supplement leverages the company’s
LeakGuard technology to effectively find
and permanently stop A/C leaks as they
form. An included dose of A/C ExtenDye
fluoresces leaks and includes an enhanced
additive package that protects and extends
the life of the compressor, its components
and the oil. The cartridges work with the
company’s Spotgun Jr. injection system.
In addition, they will not harm the A/C
system or recovery equipment, says the
company. Available are the LeakGuard
OneShot Cartridge (No. 480501), the
LeakGuard OneShot Cartridge Winged
1 oz (No. 480501EU), the LeakGuard
OneShot Injection Kit (No. 480550) and
the LeakGuard OneShot Winged Injection
Kit (No. 480550E).
