The Challenge: In-Plant Print Center to Showcase the Ability Tand Value to Print In-House he employees of Arlington County, VA can send their print jobs anywhere. Yet, most projects stay in-house. Why? Because of the County’s in-plant print operations. By leveraging Xerox’s (Booth 613) systems, Arlington’s in-house team is staying ahead of customer needs and leaving outside vendors behind. “We provide anything you can put on paper,” says Paul Sprow, Sr., the County’s Print Center Manager. Sprow depends on chargebacks to fund his operation, so he runs it like a private business. To remain competitive, he benchmarks pricing, stays on the cutting edge of technology, guarantees a one- to two-day turnaround, and continually expands his services. As a result, year-to-year print volumes have increased by 25% to approximately two million impressions. One of the most significant additions is a digital storefront for online job submission and automatic ordering of materials such as stationery, NCR forms, and the County calendar. Sprow’s team also uses printing to solve problems. For example, the group reengineered voter registration cards and replaced weather susceptible ‘No Parking’ signs with a polyester stock that “withstands rain, snow, sleet, anything.” Arlington County’s projects are produced at two in-plant facilities. The first is a print shop with two Xerox Versant 2100 Presses and third-party devices for laminating and other finishing touches. The second location is a copy center with a Xerox Nuvera 200, Xerox Color 1000, and wide format printer. Greater security is another hallmark of the Arlington County installation. To ensure ongoing protection, the center is supported by a full-time IT staff member. According to Sprow, “When you print things like police department ticket books, you’re dealing with people’s personal information. If you go outside to print, that information can be at risk.” The Arlington print team also prides itself on exceptional customer service. Some employees start work at 5:30 am. Consequently, Sprow is quick to acknowledge a similar commitment from others, “Xerox stays on top of what’s needed in the digital field with new, dependable technology. When you look at what comes with the Xerox package—great service, the ability to talk to someone if I need help—Xerox is doing an A-1 job.” Xerox Versant 2100 Press Paying Too Much For Mailing Software?
