New Bookletmaking Developments from Morgana Postpress equipment manufacturing company Morgana Systems (Booth 2448) is announcing a GRAPH EXPO 15 debut for the latest addition to its leading bookletmaking range, the BM500. The machine is capable of producing booklets of up to 200 pages. With the continued growth in digital print, demands on postpress production have also increased. This latest Morgana machine is an off-line adaptation of a very successful in-line solution sold via Xerox (Booth 613) and Ricoh (Booth 1231) to produce booklets with the mid-production digital print engines supplied by those companies. The company recognized a significant demand for the in-line version of this machine through partnerships with print engine manufacturers, and decided that there was a definite need for higher page count booklets and booklets. The BM500 adds to the capabilities of the company’s current set of bookletmakers, which are primarily focused at producing up to 30 sheets of 20lb. Morgana has linked the bookletmaker to the 2014-launched AF602 feeder, incorporating dual high-capacity bins, to provide the market with a unique solution to higher page count booklets at a very cost effective price. Also launching at GRAPH EXPO 15 is a new creasing module for the BM500 and a new creasing/slitting module for producing full-bleed work. The BM350 is an alternative machine, which is built on a similar platform producing booklets of up to 35 sheets of 20lb – equating to 140 pages. The BM500 is the first Morgana bookletmaker to incorporate the new full-colour touchscreen interface giving very clear visible instructions to the operator on all machine functions. The bookletmaker can be supplied with a lead edge trimmer and with the Morgana Squarefold option for flat edged books. Morgana BM350 and BM500 Morgana is also previewing the new VF602 vacuum fed version of its twin bin high capacity feeder. Commenting on this, Ray Hillhouse, VP of Offline Sales, says: “We are very excited about this new addition to the range. The air-assisted AF602 was launched at GRAPH EXPO last year and has been very successful, but some applications are simply more suited to a vacuum feeding head, so now we have it! The feeder is initially available for the 2000 Series bookletmakers, but will be available for the new BM500 later this year.” Both VF602 and AF602 feeders can now be equipped with a Bar Code Reading system for variable data applications. Hillhouse adds: “We’re being asked for barcode reading from sectors where there is a need for absolute set integrity or the need to produce booklets with variable page counts, such a personalised financial reports. This system answers these needs perfectly.” IEmpowering Profitability for Large Format Printers f there is one thing we know about business, it’s that change will happen. Technology, markets, and opportunities are all evolving right beneath our feet. Enfocus (Booth 444) has played a leading role in helping companies in the graphic arts industry navigate this change. Now, as change comes to large format production, Enfocus stands ready to support their evolution with a range of powerful software solutions. An industry in flux In the past, graphic arts companies could be financially successful by investing in hardware that could produce longer and faster print runs. Then came the digital revolution, and the landscape for print production was changed forever. No longer could a printer rely on hardware alone to be successful. Many printers turned to software solutions that could help them improve their margins and achieve faster ROI. The large format industry is now facing the same challenges and the opportunities that come with this evolution. In this segment, there are many factors that can impact production time, and hardware alone cannot solve these challenges anymore. To be successful today, large format printers must bring an automated solution to their business processes. Managing the unique challenges of large format production There are several factors driving the need for large format printers to start, or increase, automation of their production workflows. First is the cost of production. Large format printing materials are generally more expensive than those used for other applications. There is also a large amount of labor needed to produce what is usually a very small print run. If a mistake happens in the production process, it will likely mean that the whole job will need to be completely redone. And redoing a job is often just as expensive and time consuming as producing it the first time, thereby impacting the printer’s profitability. For large format printers to succeed today and grow in the future, they must improve processes and ensure that small mistakes don’t become big problems. This means that files that get submitted for production need to be right the first time, and every time. Taking control of the process Enfocus has been a household name in the graphic arts industry for many years. The company now brings that experience to the service of the large format printer. The solutions allow these printers to achieve the level of consistency and accuracy they need to keep their customers happy, increase production, and make their businesses profitable. The range of solutions offered by Enfocus can be used separately or together to achieve these goals: 1. Ensuring the Accuracy of Incoming Files Like those sent to commercial printers, the files large format printers receive for production can vary largely in quality and format. Fixing these files—or asking the customer for a new file—takes time and resources the printer could be using elsewhere. Enfocus PitStop, with 130,000 users worldwide, stops these problem files from becoming bigger problems by fixing the incoming PDFs so that they output as the customer intended. This dramatically improves turnaround time, and, most importantly, it reduces the amount of expensive reprints associated with large format production. 2. Eliminating Manual Intervention Once files are ready for production, Enfocus solutions continue to support large format printers by helping them eliminate the manual, repetitive tasks that are part of the process. Using Enfocus Switch, large format printers can automate repetitive tasks such as file creation, exchange, and receiving. Switch also integrates and connects to third-party applications used by large format printers, linking everything together into one customized production flow. 3. Customer Service Providing customers with excellent service is part of what will keep them coming back. Enfocus makes it possible for large format printers to provide a high level of service without adding more time or resources. Enfocus Connect supports the printers’ efforts to help their customers deliver files that have the right settings every time. Using Connect, printers create small applications on the desktop called Connectors, which have all of the printer’s PDF creation and job delivery information set. The customer simply drags and drops the files on the Connector, reassured that the file is correct and delivered to the right location. Automation in action To see the value of automation in the large format market, let’s take a look at a flag manufacturer that has adopted Enfocus solutions. Adding grommets to the flag is part of this company’s production process. To insert the grommets, the flag manufacturer (previously) had to print flags and then manually measure where each grommet needed to be placed. This process took time and held with it the possibility of error. A misplaced grommet would mean the job would need to be repaired or worse, have to be redone. By using Enfocus’ basic workflow and pre-set prepress actions, grommet markers are automatically placed on the flag—saving up to 10 minutes on each job. By automating just one step in the process, the flag manufacturer saved a significant amount of time. By also automating other steps in the process, he could save even more time. More time means he can take on more jobs. Over time, more jobs run more efficiently will result in a greater level of profitability than the printer could have achieved with hardware alone. 8 September 16, 2015 | GRAPH EXPO Official Show Daily | PrintingNews.com
