GRAPH EXPO 15: Where Learning Never Stops ALearn how you can impact the workforce of the future at Education Main Street long with showcasing the latest technologies in graphic communications, GRAPH EXPO 15 delivers a full breadth of learning experiences, from a diverse slate of seminars to one-on-one sessions with industry experts, to Education Main Street, where college, university, and educational organizations are well represented. Education Main Street gives attendees and vendors the opportunity to learn firsthand of the programs, scholarships, and opportunities offered. For industry executives, GRAPH EXPO 15 is the ideal place to meet with educational professionals, to engage in discourse on workforce needs of the current and evolving graphic communications industry and how the educational community can best meet those needs. In addition to colleges and universities, attendees are invited to stop by The Hiring Hub: Closing the Skills Gap! (Booth 570), the Print & Graphics Scholarship Foundation (PGSF) (Booth 668), and Preparing Tomorrow’s Workforce (Booth 568). GAERF, founded in 1983 by the National Association for Printing Leadership (now Epicomm), NPES The Association for Suppliers of Printing, Publishing and Converting Technologies, and the Printing Industries of America (PIA), advances knowledge and education in the field of graphic communications by supporting programs that prepare the workforce of the future. To generate interest among students while combating misconceptions about industry careers, GAERF holds an annual National Student Design Competition. The 2015 contest, its seventh annual, themed “The PIZZAZZ of Print!” challenged participants to exhibit their originality and ingenuity by creating a unique and striking marketing piece to promote strong attendance at a major event. The competition was open to all students attending secondary or post-secondary institutions in the continental U.S. who are studying in a graphic communications/ printing, advertising, graphic design or interactive media program. First place winners and their instructors received a two-day trip, all expenses paid, to attend GRAPH EXPO 15 (see Sidebar for winners). At Preparing Tomorrow’s Workforce (Booth 568), also sponsored by the GAERF, attendees can learn about programs that support a strong future for the industry to include competencies, assessments, and accreditation programs. PGSF is a private, not-for-profit, industry-directed organization that dispenses undergraduate college scholarships and graduate fellowship assistance to men and women interested in graphic communication careers. The foundation relies on industry donations to award the scholarships. This year, 200 of the 900 applicants were able to receive funding. In conjunction with two of its sponsor partners, PGSF is producing two important pieces on the floor during the show. Xerox is printing and binding the 2015-16 edition of its Directory of Schools, which lists over 200 institutions offering graphic arts courses in North America. HP is producing and handing out an updated Industry Overview poster used to promote and encourage young people to consider graphic arts as a career. Speaking of posters, the winning entry of the 2015 PGSF College Poster design competition is available at the booth. Submitted by Northwest Technical College in Goodland, KS, the poster, titled “Get in Gear...apply today for a PGSF Scholarship,” was created by Jacquelynn V. Branch and will be distributed to all colleges and high schools in the United States that have printing and graphic communication programs for the 2015–2016 academic year. This student-designed poster is used to promote the availability of scholarships to pursue a career in the graphic communication industry. Materials Matter Celebrates TPrint’s Tactile Qualities here’s no doubt that one of the leading benefits of print over digital media is the former’s tactile qualities, along with its ability to convey a message with lasting impact. Helping to drive this tactile impact are the materials. To honor the essential role materials play in the print ecosystem, enter Materials Matter, GRAPH EXPO 15’s new show floor hub. “One of the things I love about print is that it’s tactile,” notes designer and illustrator Barbara Kosoff, one of the two winners of GDUSA’s 2014 Digital Print Cover Competition. “I love being able to use different varnishes and textures. I like the fact that people can hold a print piece in their hands. You can touch it, turn its pages, and interact with it. It’s your own experience.” Show visitors are invited to step inside this 1,200 sqft specialty showcase, where multiple substrate manufacturers are demonstrating the powerful part their paper and non-paper substrates play in every print project. Mohawk (Booth 3002C), in cooperation with GRAPH EXPO, has created the collective booth area. Mohawk is North America’s largest privately owned manufacturer of fine papers and envelopes for commercial and digital printing, photo specialties and high-end direct mail. Mohawk fine papers and envelopes, include the signature brands Mohawk Superfine and Strathmore, as well as proprietary treatments Inxwell and i-Tone. With a culture of innovation, Mohawk’s business model now extends beyond paper manufacturing into new areas of growth, including digital substrates and web-based software platforms, which connect designers and printers to new markets. Sappi Fine Paper North America (Booth 3002A) is a leading North American producer of coated fine paper used in premium magazines, catalogues, books and highend print advertising. Headquartered in Boston, Sappi Fine Paper North America is known for innovation and quality. Its brand names, including McCoy, Opus, and Somerset, are some of the industry’s most widely recognized and specified. XLet The Work Flow with Xerox erox’s (Both 613) theme this year is “Just Let The Work Flow.” Xerox is showcasing its portfolio of digital technologies and solutions to help print providers become more automated and personal. They’ll learn how to produce high-value jobs and take advantage of the best opportunities in today’s graphic communications marketplace. Thousands of Xerox iGen presses are already creating billions of high-quality, high-margin sales brochures, posters, photo books, and pieces of direct-mail—often personalized and always in vibrant color. So, how do you make the industry’s most productive, profitable digital production platform even better? Add a fifth color option, boost press uptime, and offer multiple speed choices—the calling cards of the new Xerox iGen 5 Press, which will be introduced to the U.S. and showcased at GRAPH EXPO 15 for the first time. An array of digital color printing technology, including high-speed inkjet systems such as the all new Xerox Rialto 900 Inkjet Press, which is the world’s first fully integrated, narrow web inkjet press, is on display. The Rialto 900 was designed to make the high-growth world of inkjet printing more accessible than ever before, by breaking down the common cost and complexity barriers to inkjet adoption. Xerox FreeFlow Core can turn an operation into an automation powerhouse by offering new and easy ways to automate production of complex applications. Xerox is also introducing a new version of its FreeFlow Digital Publisher, a digital publishing software solution that allows users to provide both print and mobile/online communications simultaneously using a single, unified workflow. Value can be added to print in many ways, and a broad range of examples of them are on display in the Xerox booth. XMPie, A Xerox Company, is presenting a new version of its PersonalEffect software, which helps customers to deliver highly effective, personalized cross-media communications that integrate digital media. XMPie’s software that creates web-to-print portals are on display as well.
