PIA Invites You to Create Your Virtual DClassroom With the Integrated Learning Center id you know that 25% of employees leave jobs because of a lack of development opportunities? However, when you look at companies that offer eLearning or on-the-job training, they generate 25% more revenue per employee. Printing Industries of America has always had a key focus on industry education through conferences, workshops, and webinars, as well as books and training curriculums. Thousands of companies have benefitted from our industry-focused training over the years. But as our industry and our culture have transitioned, professionals have less and less resources to devote to face-to-face events. As a result web-based learning, or eLearning, has become increasingly popular. It delivers convenient, cost-effective training that makes quality education more accessible. PIA launched the Integrated Learning Center (www.printing. org/ilearning) in 2014 as an online training platform for the print and graphic arts industry—and learning has never been easier. This resource has expanded to include a comprehensive classroom full of industry courses in topics like sales, marketing and data, production, orientation, EHS concerns, and Lean and continuous improvement. PIA members through their local affiliate qualify for significant discounts to these already budget friendly training workshops. Some of our newest Integrated Learning Center courses take a deep dive into Lean resources and sales. Research says that companies with Lean programs in place are more productive and profitable overall. To implement your Lean/CI program, PIA offers a suite of Lean courses through the Integrated Learning Center. These training courses, led by industry experts, including John Compton, Malcolm Keif, and Kevin Cooper, cover critical steps you need to make implementation a success for your company. The latest courses include “Introduction to Lean Manufacturing,” “Standard Work and Total Productive Maintenance,” “5S and Teams,” and “Makeready Reduction.” You have a great product, but if customers aren’t knocking, maybe you need to rethink your sales strategy—or start building one! New courses deliver practical marketing solutions from Leslie Groene, nationally renowned sales coach, author, and speaker. These essential courses include “Prospecting 101,” “Selling Skills and Relationship Building,” “Cross Selling and Upselling,” “Escaping the Price-driven Sale,” and more quality training that will help your sales professionals close more deals and generate greater profits. ANRO Improves its Edge with Versatile Digital Production At ANRO, innovation is nothing new. From its origins in 1953 providing duplicating and secretarial services, today the suburban Philadelphia company is an industry-leading commercial print, direct mail, and digital service provider with an extensive fleet of conventional and digital presses, including three HP (Booth 1202) Indigo Digital Presses, an HP Indigo 10000 Digital Press, and an HP T300 Color Inkjet Web Press. ANRO’s dynamic digital capabilities attract lucrative new business and put it at the forefront of the industry. ANRO has a customer base comprised of Fortune 500 companies including banks, utilities, cable companies, major retailers, and brands from New England to Atlanta. In addition to providing print and mail services, ANRO also develops branded web-to-print solutions for its customers. Currently, over 30 of these programs feed work into its digital presses. Since installing its first Indigo TurboStream press in 1997, ANRO has been a proponent of liquid ink digital printing. By 2014, the company had experience with several generations of HP Indigo presses, and its fleet of HP Indigo 7000 Digital Presses was six years old. “Through our regular contact with HP, we learned about the new features on the HP Indigo 7800 Digital Press and felt the time was right to make the investment. There were a lot of choices to make when buying the presses,” says Paul DeSantis, Director of Information Technology. “We wanted to take advantage of the new HP technologies, but not invest in features our customers wouldn’t want to use.” ANRO chose the full 7-color capability and the One Shot process options for all three presses. “We installed the heavy substrate kit on two of the presses; the white ink option on two; and the special effects kit for raised print and textures on one of the presses,” DeSantis explains. “These features gave us a host of new product capabilities to offer customers.” ANRO also installed a digital cutting and creasing machine from HP finishing partner Highcon for card, folder, and folding carton production. “We built our ROI business case for the HP Indigo 7800 Digital Presses on the value-adding print features and anticipated savings on imaging oil. An investment in three new presses is a significant commitment for a company. Our long-standing relationship with HP across a variety of printers and presses provided us with the assurance we needed to proceed with confidence,” says DeSantis. “Shortly after installing our HP Indigo 7800 Digital Presses, we had the opportunity to print a POS display job on Teslin for a major retail brand,” DeSantis explains. “The original order was for 5,000, but the customer was so impressed by the rich color, deep black, and opaque white that he increased the order to 10,000 before deciding to migrate the entire project to a digital printing platform and have ANRO print all 50,000 pieces.” DeSantis credits this 10-fold increase in the job to the One Shot printing technology. “For jobs requiring super-critical registration, it’s a real differentiator,” he says. “Even though it was more expensive than printing conventionally, the customer thought the impact on the brand’s image was worth it.” ANRO has also seen a big impact on its environmental footprint as a result of the new presses. “We used to get imaging oil by the pallet-load,” says DeSantis. “The new presses generate imaging oil through a sophisticated recycling system so we have enough to supply our HP Indigo 10000 Digital Press. We save on shipping, space, and disposal, too. It’s an amazing change. Greater uptime and other efficiencies means that we are seeing an increase in productivity of 12% to 16% on each press,” DeSantis concludes. Amcor Flexibles Gent Increases Productivity with QuadTech’s AIntegrated Quality Control Solutions mcor Flexibles Gent, Belgium, placed an order for its third QuadTech (Booth 3345) Waste Management System, reinforcing the companies’ long-standing relationship and adding to its seven QuadTech Inspection Systems and multiple Data Central interfaces. These installations deliver a closed-loop, end-to-end quality solution that provides increased productivity and guarantees 100% defect-free packaging for print customers. Amcor Gent’s aim was to create a complete quality control solution with 100% inspection, accountable data available from multiple locations, and precise removal of defective material. This was made possible with the introduction of three QuadTech Waste Management Systems. “Waste and quality are now managed throughout every printing phase,” explains Johan Demesure, Amcor Gent’s Slitting Department Manager. “While QuadTech’s Inspection System and Data Central enabled us to automatically correct defects quicker and minimize defective copy, the waste that was identified was still manually tagged and removed. This meant that there was still a risk of supplying our customers with defective copy, as rolls could have been labelled at a delay, incorrectly or missed entirely. “With an automated tagging machine at the end of the press linked to the Quad- Tech tools, we now don’t have any of these worries. This accurately tags the rolls with a sticker barcode every 300m, so any defect areas can be easily found. It also keeps the parameters tight and automatically stops the equipment to an accuracy of 50-60cm near the defect, at speeds of 500m per minute.” The QuadTech Waste Management System takes quality control information from the Inspection System and Data Central statistics and has automatic control of the slitter/rewinder to ensure that defective material is removed efficiently. The loss of quality product is eradicated by pinpointing exact sections of substrate with defects to cut. All zero-defective copy ends up in customers’ hands. “As a result of this new system, we lose minimal saleable substrate and manual unpredictability is eliminated. This has increased our department’s productivity over the last two years. We also enjoy complete transparency and traceability, which leads to a much more efficient working environment between the slitting and printing departments. It is because of these benefits that our fourth QuadTech system has been ordered,” says Demesure. From design to validation, Amcor Gent now offers its customers a total solution, using its expertise to reduce a product’s time to market. Demesure concludes, “Without the QuadTech equipment it would have been impossible to accomplish our current level of business success, and win new business from the demanding healthcare markets. The medical sector is also very particular about its print suppliers. They visit multiple times as well as test our production process with example products. But as our output is 100% defect-free and we can certify, trace, and prove any removals, the QuadTech systems continue to impress them—with some demanding to use the Gent site only for all their needs. “With QuadTech technology in our business, we now win work outside of Europe and the Americas, with countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Brazil placing jobs. We look forward to continuing our relationship with QuadTech and developing our business with a solid technology partner,” says Demesure. 12 September 15, 2015 | GRAPH EXPO Official Show Daily | PrintingNews.com
