PUR Perfect Binding PUR binding provides the strongest, most flexible adhesive binding solution available and offers several key advantages over other binding methods currently on the market. With PUR the book blocks are milled on the spine to enable the paper to absorb adhesive, providing a binding strength that hot-melt glue systems simply cannot compete with. The books are trimmed on three sides to produce a professional finished result. When inks, coatings, or digital print toners are present in the spine area these can compromise the strength of typical hot-melt perfect binding. PUR adhesives are resistant to this and form a super-strong bond with all weights and finishes of paper stocks. In addition PUR works well with synthetic and recycled-content stock, making it the ideal binding solution where a mix of substrates is involved in a printed publication. When PUR binding machines were originally conceived, the hardware was typically geared to large quantity production of paperback books and periodicals. In recent years the focus has been on the creation of smaller, more compact binding solutions. One of the most popular ranges of such equipment is being marketed by Morgana Systems (Booth 2448). To date, four different models have been produced in Morgana’s DigiBook range, culminating in the release of the DigiBook 200 at GRAPH EXPO 14. This machine typifies the way that these more compact systems have been designed around the needs of the smaller litho and digital print producer. Features such as touch screen operation, complete with automatic format changes, provide for equipment that is both easy to learn and to use. The patented hermetically sealed PUR application system for a spine and side gluing with automatic glue cut-off are typical of the design of a system intended for short to medium runs. It means that the glue system is readily available for even the shortest production run, and everyday cleaning tasks are minimized. The gluing heads are the same across the product range, so the bind quality is identical from the 150 books per hour model through to the 450 books per hour machine. In operation, features such as the book block measuring system make it ideal for short run production. The book block measuring capability sets the machines heads automatically, meaning that users can switch from one size of book to another very swiftly and easily. Morgana DigiBook 200 The DigiBook 200 handles spine lengths from 4.3" to 14.9" and a maximum thickness of 1.9", and can produce up to 200 books per hour. Retractable spine milling means that the device can go from soft- to hard-cover binding at the flick of a switch. Side gluing for the cover hinge is adjustable depending upon the cover style required. The company has added an electronic connection to a Morgana AutoCreaser Pro so that spine creases can be made to a publications cover prior to the cover being added to the completed book in the binding operation. Web-Offset Is Front and Center for Goss Near News Print—The Newspaper Pavilion, printing press manufacturer shows its Nlatest ‘conventional’ technologies for newspaper production ot far from News Print—The Newspaper Pavilion, Goss International (Booth 853) is highlighting the advantages of its web offset technology for commercial, newspaper, and packaging applications. The company’s exhibit here at GRAPH EXPO 15 is focusing on its product portfolio, highlighting the Sunday Vpak press for high-quality, short-run packaging applications, and the Magnum Compact press for short- to medium-run book, newspaper and semi-commercial applications, and its range of Sunday commercial web presses. Goss also is providing further information about its latest partner solutions, such as Alwan’s Color Expertise Technology. Now commercially available across the full Goss product range, this software suite includes extended color gamut, enabling customers to add two or three inks to conventional process inks for exact brand color reproduction without the need for spot inks. Facilitating a substantial reduction in the costs usually associated with ink changeovers, the update is expected to bring customers a 30 to 50% cost reduction compared to the use of spot inks through a combination of eliminating ink changeovers and reduced ink inventories. Alwan’s Color Expertise Technology also features G7-certified color management and quality control software that helps to increase print quality and consistency; reduce cost and ultimately maximize productivity across the production cycle. “GRAPH EXPO 15 is the ideal platform for Goss to engage with customers and prospects about our latest product developments and partner innovations across market sectors,” says Mike D’Angelo, Goss Managing Director for the Americas. “We always welcome the chance to communicate directly with printing companies of all sizes, and provide details of how Goss technologies can potentially re-expand margins, revitalize production capabilities, and create flexible runlength opportunities.” The Goss Lifetime Support team also presents parts, service, and enhancement programs, designed to extend the competitive lifespan of both press and finishing systems. Visitors who stop by the Goss booth can find out what special parts promotions are being offered this week. Recent Goss customer projects in the U.S. also are a key feature here at GRAPH EXPO 15. “Our customers continue to push the boundaries in the markets they serve and we have been privileged enough to be involved in some significant American customer projects and new press installations,” continues D’Angelo. “Since GRAPH EXPO 14, the first Magnum Compact press system in the U.S. has been installed at Advance Publishing in Staten Island. Installation of the first triple-wide Goss Uniliner press was also completed at Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “These U.S. firsts and the new Goss presses successfully installed at other North and South American customers, such as Colonial Press International, Creel Printing, Grupo El Comercio, and Infagon Web S.A., further demonstrate Goss’ commitment to delivering market-leading offset solutions, tailored to our individual customers’ needs,” D’Angelo concludes. 54 September 15, 2015 | GRAPH EXPO Official Show Daily | PrintingNews.com
