Take a walk over to Education Main Street, and learn how these organizations are working to ensure young people are attracted to the industry: Graphic Communications Education Association (formerly IGAEA) (Booth 768), The Hiring Hub: Closing the Skills Gap (Booth 570), the Print & Graphics Scholarship Foundation (PGSF) (Booth 668), and Preparing Tomorrow’s Workforce (Booth 568). “PGSF is on a mission to raise the visibility of the foundation, of our goals, so that it might continue to champion the graphic arts industry as a profession of choice to students across the U.S.,” says John Berthelsen, VP-Development, PGSF. The aging workforce is a huge concern for owners of print companies, acknowledges Berthelsen. “These owners are concerned where their workforce is going to come from, as employees retire and leave,” he says. “We have to get young people in and get them educated. Through the efforts of the foundation, we are hoping to attract young people and help fund their education.” Adds Berthelsen, “By supporting the foundation you are supporting that effort.” At GRAPH EXPO 15, the visibility campaign is multi-faceted. At its booth, PGSF is handing out posters of its poster competition for students. The poster is sent to schools nationwide to remind students to apply for scholarships for the upcoming year. Not that they need reminding; there were 900 applicants for 2015; however, the foundation only had the funds to sponsor 200 students. Currently only 50 manufacturers/printing companies are donating funds to sponsor scholarships. This year’s crop of scholarship winners comes from 80 different schools. The foundation doesn’t just fund four-year colleges; they also fund students attending technical schools. At GRAPH EXPO, PGSF is also teaming up with Xerox (Booth 613) and HP (Booth 1202). At the show, Xerox is printing and binding the 2015-16 edition of its Directory of Schools, which lists over 200 institutions offering graphic arts courses in North America. HP is producing and handing out an updated Industry Overview poster that can be used in schools or by printers. “The industry promotion poster is intended to get kids mostly interested; and consider the industry as a career,” Berthelsen explains. “It’s a general overview, a teaser, detailing the different activities involved in the graphic art that maybe students didn’t realize are part of the industry. It then directs them to websites where they can get more details.” PGSF is also poised to roll out its new website at GRAPH EXPO 15. The new design and format makes it easier for students and potential donors to find the information they require. Below is a listing of additional educational institutions and organizations located on Education Main Street: Ball State University (Booth 772), Cal Poly State University (Booth 669), Chowan University (Booth 769), Clemson University (Booth 773), Columbia College Chicago (Booth 672), Ferris State University (Booth 670), GAERF Student Design Competition (Booth 569), Harper College (Booth 770), New York City College of Technology (Booth 771), RIT-School of Media Sciences (Booth 767), University of Wisconsin-Stout (Booth 673), and Western Illinois University (Booth 671).
