GTI’s LiteSupport Service Helps Hammer Packaging Improve Quality West Henrietta, NY-based Hammer Packaging is a privately-held packaging printer with over $100 million in sales and 450 employees. The company uses its expertise in sheetfed offset, web offset, flexographic and digital technologies to produce cut & stack labels, shrink sleeve labels, pressure sensitive labels, roll-fed labels, foam labels, in-mold labels, and premium packets for major consumer brands. Hammer Packaging continuously invests in the services, products, and people required to exceed its customers’ expectations. Achieving a G7 Master Certification is one example of how Hammer Packaging is committed to quality. G7 Certification requires that viewing conditions for color-critical printing are compliant with the ISO 3664:2009 standard. The challenge for Hammer Packaging was to maintain the D50 lighting conditions required by ISO 3664:2009 in all of its viewing areas across two facilities. They also wished to achieve viewing-to-viewing system compatibility between their customer viewing area, prepress department, ink room, and press rooms. To meet this challenge, Hammer Packaging chose to partner with GTI Graphic Technology (Booth 435) to implement a LiteSupport audit and certification program. GTI is a leading manufacturer of tight tolerance lighting systems for critical color viewing. GTI’s product line ranges from desktop viewers to viewing systems designed for large format applications. During a LiteSupport audit, GTI’s lighting specialist Measurements are taken with a NIST traceable spectroradiometer with a one nm band pass and range of 250 nm to 850 nm (this includes UV measurement capabilities). measures all viewing booths with a NIST Traceable Spectroradiometer. A detailed report is then generated to show conformance of each viewing area to the ISO 3664:2009 specification and to each other. This data is used to develop a relamping and maintenance program that will bring all booths into specification and ensure compatibility between viewing areas. Upon completion of a LiteSupport audit each qualifying viewing booth receives a sticker of certification from GTI that shows the certification date and stating conformance to the ISO 3664:2009 standard. With all viewing systems and locations in compliance, Hammer Packaging is now performing visual color appraisals with greater confidence and consistency. The result is better communication with customers and between departments during the color reproduction process, resulting in fewer proofing cycles and faster customer approvals. Xplor Breakfast Explores “The Emergence of Omni-Channel Communications” Over the past seven years, Xplor International’s co-located event has transitioned from a traditional multi-track conference to the current breakfast session which debuted at PRINT 13 drawing more than 200 attendees. Join Xplor today in Room N426ab, McCormick Place North, from 7:00 to 10:00 am for this complimentary session, sponsored by Crawford Technologies (Booth 344), Canon Solutions America (Booth 1213), and Xerox (Booth 613). Xplor International’s relationship with GRAPH EXPO continues to evolve as changes in digital technology and trends within the industry move more traditional printing companies towards expanding their capabilities. Xplor plays a role in this transition as the association for the Digital Document and Customer Communication industry. UnSquaring the Wheel Project Rolls Out at TGRAPH EXPO oday, Tuesday, September 15 and Wednesday, September 16, print business owners and executives have a unique opportunity to participate in the debut of a new approach to strategy and operations. It’s called UnSquaring the Wheel, the brainchild of Professor Chris Bondy, Gannett Distinguished Professor at Rochester Institute of Technology; Dr. Joe Webb, Principal at Strategies for Management and Director of WhatTheyThink’s Economics and Research Center; and, Wayne Peterson, Principal at the Black Canyon Consulting Group. “The objective of Unsquaring is to guide top executives in the assessment of their business and in reinventing and transforming their business,” says Peterson. “It is comprehensive, covering sales and marketing, operations, and other key decision areas.” Bondy adds, “We wanted to create a program that applied to graphic communications organizations of all sizes and across all operations. It stresses the integration of company functions as essential.” To assess a company, the business is divided into three broad areas: Platform, Resources, and Customers. Each of these is subdivided into three specific areas of concentration, representing nine spokes of a wheel. “Platform” assesses a company’s services, processes, and technologies; “Resources” assesses a company’s employees, financial situation, and strategic alliances; and “Customers” assesses the overall customer experience, the “brand,” and business development strategies. All of these elements are evaluated on a scale of 0 to 5 and plotted on a circular grid, with 0 in the center and 5 along the circumference. If all nine of the assessed elements score a 5, the graph describes a perfect circle, or wheel. Elements scoring less than 5 cause the wheel to become less round—or more square. Identifying where the “squareness” occurs shows what the company needs to improve to thus “unsquare the wheel.” GRAPH EXPO 15 attendees will have an opportunity to unsquare their own wheels during the show. Today, from 2:00 to 5:30 pm, attendees will receive an introduction to the methodology and learn about the three disciplines and the nine vector areas, including case studies. Then, on Wednesday, from 8:00 to 11:30 am, they will reconvene for the continuation of the topics and the Q&A session. At that time, they will complete the company assessment. Within two weeks after the program, attendees will review their confidential results with one of the UnSquaring leaders. Program attendees will receive a copy of the UnSquaring the Wheel book. Both sessions will be held in Room S105abc McCormick Place South. Attendees can sign up for this event at the registration area at the entrance to the show. 60 September 15, 2015 | GRAPH EXPO Official Show Daily | PrintingNews.com
